Recording
Dr. Chud used keyboards to create the various special effects heard in the songs: gong, wind, dunes, and timpani in songs 1 and 10, pounds in song 3, and timpani and gun shots in song 4. He also used a backwards vocal track to create "moans" in song 1 and shook his drum rack to add effects to song 16. Daniel Rey created the dog howls in "Dig Up Her Bones" and the explosion in "Don't Open 'Til Doomsday." Doyle added 5 tracks of guitar feedback to each song. Basic instrumentation was recorded at Dreamland in 12//1996 with Andy Baker and Sue Kappa. Vocals were added later at Spa Recording studio with Hillary Johnson and Grace Falconer. Dr. Chud added special effects at Creepy Attic Studio; Daniel Rey and John Smith added effects at Baby Monster Studio. The album was mixed by Mike Wallace and Steve Sisco at Sound Tracks in New York, NY.

Songs
"Abominable Dr. Phibes" is the instrumental introduction to "Dr. Phibes Rises Again," although the songs were recorded separately. "Dead Kings Rise" is included only on the LP version of American Psycho; "Hell Night" is only available on the CD. Tapes of an early mix of songs 1-19, featuring alternate endings to "Crimson Ghost" and "Mars Attacks" exist among collectors. John Cafiero remastered "Dig Up Her Bones" (DUV), "Abominable Dr. Phibes" (APV), and "American Psycho" (APV) for promotional videos.
