THE UTNE READER (July/August 1996) ---------------------------------- THE MISFITS: Box Set (Caroline). The Misfits weren't the only band to blend B-movie camp with rock 'n' roll, but their black costumes and songs about gore, mutilation, and flying saucers made them if not the heart then certainly the blood and guts of what became known as Gothic rock. The 100 minutes of music in this coffin-shaped box set cover the group's entire six-year history, documenting it's progression from an instrument smashing caricature of every parent's worst heavy-metal nightmare to a ghoulish burlesque act whose songs ("Devil's Whorehouse" and "Green Hell," for example) are, in the end, suprisingly catchy. -Patrick Smith
